Heavy rain triggered an IMD red alert in Delhi on Friday, flooding parts of IGI Airport and delaying more than 550 flights, with ten aircraft diverted to Jaipur, Lucknow, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh.
The specific numbers matter less here than the structural point they illustrate: IGI is one of the busiest airports in the country, and a single weather event there doesn’t just disrupt Delhi travellers, it ripples outward through every connecting itinerary that routes through the capital.
That’s a familiar pattern in any network with a dominant hub, whether it’s an airport, a logistics depot, or a single cloud region a business has concentrated its infrastructure in. Redundancy at the edges doesn’t help much if the center still represents a single point of failure that, when disrupted, degrades the entire system at once.
Waterlogging around Terminal 3 and the Vasant Kunj underpass adds a second layer worth noting: airport-side disruption and ground-access disruption compounded each other on the same day, meaning even passengers whose flights weren’t directly delayed still faced a degraded experience getting to the terminal.
For any business whose operations depend on a similarly concentrated hub, whether physical or digital, the practical takeaway isn’t to panic about rare disruption days, it’s to have a tested fallback plan for when the hub degrades, rather than discovering the dependency for the first time mid-disruption.
Delhi has faced repeated bouts of airport disruption this monsoon season, with heavy rain periodically triggering diversions and delays at IGI in recent weeks.
IGI Airport is one of the busiest in the country, typically handling well over a thousand flight movements a day, meaning disruptions there tend to cascade across the wider domestic network.
Passengers travelling to and from Delhi in the coming days have been advised to monitor airline communications closely given the ongoing unsettled weather pattern.
