A 28-year-old gym trainer, Vijay Kumar, was shot dead by motorcycle-borne assailants in Delhi’s Aya Nagar area on Monday, and a social media post attributed to gangster Himanshu Bhau has since claimed responsibility for the killing.
It might seem like an online claim of responsibility settles the question of who’s behind an attack, but investigators are still treating it as something to verify rather than as established fact — and that caution is well founded.
A public claim of responsibility, unlike a confession made under investigation, carries no cost to being false: it can be posted by the actual perpetrator, by someone claiming credit opportunistically, or by a rival trying to implicate a specific gang. Police still have to independently establish the claim’s authenticity against physical evidence, CCTV footage and witness accounts.
That’s a distinction worth generalizing: social media claims of responsibility, whether for a targeted killing or a cyberattack, function as a lead to investigate, not a substitute for the investigation itself, precisely because the platform makes false claims essentially costless to post.
The case’s other detail — a suspected connection to a long-running family rivalry in Aya Nagar, alongside an earlier gang-linked murder in the same locality — suggests investigators are also weighing whether this fits a pattern of recurring local violence, which is itself a separate line of inquiry from whatever the social media claim asserts.
Delhi Police have increased patrolling in the area following the incident, according to officials familiar with the investigation.
The use of social media to claim responsibility for targeted killings has become a recurring feature of gang-related violence investigated by Delhi Police in recent years.
Police have not yet made any arrests in connection with Monday’s shooting as the investigation continues.
Authorities said CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed to help identify and track the motorcycle-borne assailants.
