Kunal Kemmu’s Vibe has earned Rs 6.77 crore net over its opening weekend, well ahead of Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Daayra at Rs 3.92 crore net, according to Sacnilk’s live figures.
Those numbers deserve two caveats. The first is that they are trade estimates. On Saturday afternoon, a trend for Daayra’s second day stood at about Rs 64 lakh, and the number that eventually replaced it was Rs 1.75 crore.
The second is that a weekend is a small sample. A film with good reviews and a soft opening can hold better over weekdays than one that opened big on curiosity, so the size of the Sunday-to-Monday drop tells you more about audience response than the Friday number does.
Daayra’s reviews were largely positive, with ratings around 3.5 to 4 stars, but its opening was soft. Vibe, an action-comedy, has been drawing the bigger crowds.
The useful habit is to treat early box office as a moving reading and to wait until final figures and weekday holds are in before calling a film a hit or a miss.
