Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his 80th Independence Day address from Red Fort on Saturday to lay out a set of industrial policy targets with direct relevance for founders building in deep-tech and manufacturing.

On semiconductors, Modi said seven to eight new manufacturing plants are expected to become operational within one to two years, a concrete timeline that gives startups and suppliers in the chip ecosystem a planning horizon for component sourcing and talent hiring.

The energy announcements were equally significant for capital-intensive businesses: a reaffirmed target of 100 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity by 2047, with five new reactors expected online within six to seven years, alongside plans to open previously restricted maritime zones for mineral and crude oil exploration.

For founders in edtech and workforce development, Modi’s announcement of AI-driven skill training for one crore young people over the next year, plus free online coaching for competitive exams, signals a large potential government-backed demand pool for training infrastructure and content partnerships.

The overarching frame was Modi’s twin goals of ‘Viksit Bharat’ — a developed India by 2047 — and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat,’ or self-reliant India, both of which have historically translated into policy support and incentive schemes for domestic manufacturing and technology sectors.

Taken together, the speech reads less as ceremonial rhetoric and more as a rough roadmap of where government procurement, subsidy schemes and regulatory easing are likely to concentrate over the next few years — useful signal for founders deciding where to place long-term bets.

The prime minister also warned against what he described as ‘dimaagi Naxals,’ or intellectual Naxalism, calling for such elements to be identified and isolated to keep the country’s development on track.

Around five thousand special guests were invited to witness the celebrations at Red Fort, including artisans under the PM Vishwakarma scheme, women entrepreneurs under the PM Mudra Yojana, street vendors under PM SVANidhi, and taxi drivers of Bharat Taxi.
