CBSE Class 12 supplementary practical examinations for compartment-category students began on Wednesday and will run through August 4, illustrating how the board’s exam system builds in a second chance within the same academic year.
The practicals cover students placed in the compartment category due to a Repeat Practical (RP) or Repeat Theory and Practical Both (RB) requirement in one or more subjects.
Students in the RP category, who failed only the practical component, need to appear only for the practical exam, since their existing theory marks carry forward — a design that avoids penalising students twice for the same theory performance.
Students in the RB category, who must clear both theory and practical components, are required to appear for both parts of the supplementary examination.
CBSE had asked eligible students to contact their school or examination centre by July 27 with their result or marksheet copy and admit card to confirm scheduling details — a coordination step that increasingly mirrors how ed-tech platforms manage large-scale scheduling logistics.
Regular students will take the practicals at their own schools, while private candidates will appear at the centres assigned for their theory exams, with CBSE regional offices arranging alternate venues where laboratory facilities are unavailable.
External examiners for the practicals are appointed exclusively by CBSE regional offices, while schools appoint internal examiners from their own teaching staff, a two-tier evaluation structure meant to reduce conflicts of interest.
Practical marks must be uploaded the same day as the exam and become final once submitted, with no scope for later changes — a same-day finality rule that keeps the compartment result timeline compact for students awaiting college admission decisions.
The supplementary examination window gives compartment-category students a chance to clear pending subjects within the same academic year, rather than waiting for the next annual cycle.
