An India Meteorological Department red alert for heavy to extremely heavy rain in four Gujarat districts — Ahmedabad, Anand, Surendranagar and Rajkot — is disrupting normal business activity across the state’s industrial and commercial belt on August 1, 2026.
Ahmedabad, Gujarat’s largest commercial hub and a major textile and pharmaceutical manufacturing centre, is among the districts under red alert, alongside Anand, Surendranagar and Rajkot, while 12 more districts, including Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana, Gandhinagar and Bharuch, remain on orange alert.
The disruption follows an even broader red alert on July 31 covering 13 districts including Vadodara, Surat, Bharuch and Navsari — key centres for Gujarat’s chemicals, textiles and diamond-processing industries — which had already forced school and office schedule changes in several cities.
For businesses operating in the affected districts, the closures extend beyond schools: anganwadis in Ahmedabad will stay shut until August 3, and companies with logistics or field operations in the red-alert zone face likely delays to deliveries and site visits through the alert period.
The state government’s disaster response machinery has been placed on high alert, with district administrations coordinating relief resources — a signal that authorities expect the disruption to extend at least through the next day before conditions ease.
The IMD’s forecast points to a de-escalation from August 2, when eight districts are expected to move to a yellow alert, offering businesses in Gujarat’s key industrial centres a clearer picture of when normal operations are likely to resume.
The India Meteorological Department has attributed the spell of heavy rain to an active monsoon system moving across the western coast, a pattern it has tracked closely through the final week of July.
Disaster management authorities in the affected districts have been placed on standby, with local administrations coordinating rescue teams and pumping equipment in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.
