Prithviraj Sukumaran and Parvathy Thiruvothu’s Malayalam heist thriller ‘I, Nobody’ premieres on JioHotstar today, roughly six weeks after wrapping a theatrical run that collected only around Rs 15 crore worldwide.

That turnaround time is the more interesting data point here. A film that underperforms at the box office used to sit in limbo for months before a streaming deal materialised; this one moved to its second distribution channel within weeks of its theatrical exit.

The film is directed by Nissam Basheer and follows Rajeevan, an ordinary government clerk played by Prithviraj, who gets pulled into a Rs 17-crore bank robbery, a premise reviewers said delivered a genuinely engaging thriller despite its muted theatrical numbers.

That gap, between the strong critical reception and the weak box office, is itself instructive: theatrical performance and underlying content quality don’t always move together, and a fast pivot to streaming is one way to let a genuinely good product find its actual audience.

For founders running any kind of content or product business with multiple distribution channels, the underlying discipline is the same: don’t let a single channel’s underperformance become the final verdict on the product itself, especially if a second channel exists and can be activated quickly.

The film’s wide language availability, Malayalam audio with Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi options, on JioHotstar also signals a broader distribution bet: a title that didn’t travel well in cinemas gets a second chance to find niche audiences across multiple language markets simultaneously.

Nissam Basheer’s direction has been noted for pacing the heist elements of the story alongside the more personal stakes facing Rajeevan’s character throughout the film.

JioHotstar has increasingly become a landing spot for recently released Malayalam titles seeking wider distribution beyond their home state audience.
