He rides horses, mentors founders, and has made an entire company out of the word ‘no.’ In a startup culture addicted to more, Sehej Sharma is betting his career on less — and it is starting to look like the smartest bet in the room.

Interview with Sehej Sharma, Co-Founder & CEO, Focus Realm

Spend an hour with Sehej Sharma and you notice something unusual for a founder in his position. He does not try to impress you.

He does not open with a valuation. He does not reel off a list of awards. He does not describe his company as “disrupting” anything. Instead, he asks you a question, listens to the whole answer, and then says something so precise that you realise he has been thinking about your problem longer than you have.

It is a rare quality. And it is why a growing number of people who watch India’s startup ecosystem closely have started saying the same thing about the co-founder and CEO of Focus Realm: this is a founder to watch.

A Conviction That Came from Home

Sharma’s story does not begin in a boardroom or an accelerator. It begins at home, listening to his mother, who has spent years working in hospitality, describe the daily frustration of trying to hold a standard together with binders, registers and hope.

“I grew up hearing the problem,” he says. “Long before I had any language for it, I understood that the people doing the most important work in a hotel were the least supported by the tools around them.”

That empathy, rooted in something personal rather than something read in a pitch deck, gives Sharma an authority that is hard to fake. When he talks to a general manager about the pain of a surprise audit, he is not performing understanding. He grew up with it.

The Contrarian Instinct

What sets Sharma apart intellectually is a conviction most founders would find almost impossible to act on. He believes that most business software fails not because it does too little, but because it does far too much. Industry estimates suggest that up to 80 percent of features in typical learning platforms go unused, and Sharma has built his entire company on the lesson of that figure.

He calls the philosophy strategic minimalism. In practice it means building only what a client will actually use every day and having the nerve to leave everything else out, even when a customer asks for it, even when a competitor has it, even when it would look good in a demo.

“Anyone can add a feature,” he says. “It takes real conviction to say ‘we will not build that’ to a person who might pay you. But that ‘no’ is what keeps the product usable. It is a kindness to the person at the end of the chain who has thirty seconds to use it.”

It is the kind of thinking that separates builders from followers. And it runs through everything Focus Realm has made: a service-execution platform that turns hotel SOPs into timed tasks with photo and supervisor evidence, so every shift produces an audit-ready service record instead of a binder nobody reads.

A Leader People Want to Build With

Sharma’s co-founders, COO Ali Electricwala and CTO Aditya Mishra, each bring a different form of discipline to the company. Sharma speaks about both with a generosity that reveals as much about him as about them. He credits Electricwala with ensuring the company has never overpromised a client, and Mishra with a subtraction-first design philosophy that keeps the product focused.

Great founders are often defined by the people they persuade to build alongside them, and by whether they share the credit when those people do exceptional work. By that measure, Sharma is already leading like someone far more experienced.

Honesty as a Superpower

Perhaps the most striking thing about Sharma is his refusal to perform certainty he has not earned. Focus Realm is pre-revenue, working toward its first paying hotel customer before the end of 2026, and Sharma says so without hesitation.

In an ecosystem where founders routinely inflate traction and blur the line between interest and revenue, that honesty stands out. It also builds a kind of trust that polish never can. Operators believe him because he tells them where he actually is.

“I would rather be a founder people watched actually build something, mistakes and all,” he says, “than one who only shows up once the story has been smoothed over for a press release.”

Ambition, Properly Understood

None of this should be mistaken for small ambition. Sharma’s vision for Focus Realm is expansive: to become the operating system for service standards in Indian hospitality, the quiet layer beneath a hotel’s operations that makes sure what is supposed to happen, happens. Through the company’s second product line, he is applying the same philosophy to universities, colleges and schools, betting that the discipline of building only what an institution needs can travel across entire sectors.

He studies the best operators in the world, from the frontline technology Walmart put in the hands of its store associates to the operations-execution platforms that keep American restaurant chains consistent, and asks what their lessons mean for a country where most hotels are independent and most workers carry their own phones.

That combination, global curiosity, local empathy and a stubborn commitment to simplicity, is exactly the profile of a founder whose best work is still ahead of him.

The Next Big Thing Is a Quiet One

India will produce many loud founders in the coming decade. It will produce far fewer who build with this kind of patience, honesty and precision.

Sehej Sharma is one of them. He is not the founder shouting the loudest. He is the one who listened longest, built most deliberately, and had the courage to say no when saying yes would have been easier.

“If Focus Realm succeeds,” he says, “it will not be because we built more than everyone else. It will be because we had the discipline to build less, and build it so well that it was the only thing anyone needed.”

Remember the name. You will be hearing it again.
