A new Vande Bharat Express connecting Udaipur and Surat will be welcomed at a launch event in Udaipur on October 2, with regular services beginning October 3, in what officials describe as a significant enhancement to rail connectivity between the two regions.

Vande Bharat launches have tended to draw attention when they connect major metro cities, but routes like Udaipur-Surat point to a different, quieter phase of the rollout: linking regional economic and tourism hubs that fall outside the biggest metro corridors.

Pairing a tourism-heavy city like Udaipur with an industrial and textile hub like Surat also suggests the route is designed with more than one kind of traveller in mind, business commuters and tourists both stand to benefit from a faster, more reliable service.

The practical value of a route like this is less about the technology of the train itself and more about whether it meaningfully cuts travel time compared to existing options, since that is what ultimately determines whether business and leisure travellers actually shift to it.

As the Vande Bharat network continues expanding into these secondary city-pair routes, each individual launch matters less as a standalone event and more as a data point in how comprehensively India’s rail network is being modernised beyond its headline metro routes.

The trains are known for shorter travel times compared to conventional express trains on similar routes.

Indian Railways has been expanding the Vande Bharat network to connect more regional city pairs, not just major metro routes.

Surat is a major industrial and textile hub in Gujarat, while Udaipur is a significant tourist destination in Rajasthan.

Improved rail connectivity between the two cities is expected to benefit both business and tourist travel.

Vande Bharat trains typically feature amenities such as automatic doors, onboard Wi-Fi and reclining seats.

The train’s introduction adds to the growing list of Vande Bharat routes launched across India through 2026.
