That India’s winning time fell short of its own 2004 national record is worth noting, but it is a less important detail than who India beat to get there: a Bahrain team anchored by an Olympic medallist in an individual event.
Beating a stronger individual talent within a relay format says something specific about team execution, since relay races reward consistent baton exchanges and even pacing across four runners as much as any single athlete’s raw speed.
That this is India’s first relay title in this event since 2018 also frames the win as ending a genuine gap rather than continuing an unbroken streak, giving it more significance than a routine title defence would carry.
Combined with a rising overall medal tally through Day 10, this result adds to a picture of India’s athletics programme delivering across individual and team events alike at these Games, rather than depending on isolated standout performances.

The win came on Day 10 of the Asian Games, a day that also saw Neeru Dhanda win trap shooting gold and two boxers reach their finals.
India’s overall medal tally at the Games rose to 53 following Day 10’s results.
Day 10 also saw Gulveer Singh complete a hat-trick of medals in distance running events.
The Asian Games 2026 are being held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4.
India’s relay squads have traditionally been among the country’s stronger track and field medal contenders at multi-sport Games.
