BESCOM’s six-hour scheduled power outage in parts of Bengaluru on Wednesday, from 11 am to 5 pm, is a useful reminder for local businesses of how much operational planning still has to account for infrastructure downtime.
The outage, tied to maintenance under the Kattigenahalli substation, will affect Uttar Gate 1, 2 and 3, the Embassy Office and Philips Company premises, Dwaraka Nagar, Baba Nagar, Kattigenahalli, Bagalur Cross, Bagalur Main Road, Manipal College and Vinayaka Nagar and their surrounding areas — a zone that includes both residential pockets and commercial premises.
BESCOM said the shutdown is necessary for urgent infrastructure maintenance and substation repairs, including replacing old wiring and clearing tree branches near power lines.
The utility added that the outage would also allow for transformer inspections aimed at reducing outage risk as monsoon rains intensify — the kind of preventive maintenance that, done well, reduces costlier unplanned downtime later.
Residents and small businesses in the affected zone have been advised to fully charge devices before 11 am and prepare emergency lighting, standard contingency steps for any operation reliant on continuous power.
BESCOM also asked that lifts and heavy motors not be used during the outage window, with power restoration handled through staggered switching after 5 pm to avoid surge damage to connected equipment.
The maintenance is being coordinated with the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited, illustrating how transmission and distribution utilities increasingly plan joint outage windows to limit the number of separate disruptions businesses have to absorb.
Updates on restoration can be tracked via the BESCOM Mithra app or the utility’s 1912 helpline, tools that founders running operations in the affected localities may want to bookmark for future planned outages.
BESCOM’s distribution footprint covers eight Karnataka districts, including Bangalore Urban and Bangalore Rural, spanning more than 41,000 square kilometres and serving a population upwards of 2 crore — a scale that makes even routine maintenance windows logistically significant for the businesses operating within them.
