Shubman Gill has become the world’s No. 1 ranked ODI batter, overtaking New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell in the latest ICC rankings — a shift that illustrates how quickly performance-based rankings can move in professional sport.
Gill’s rise was driven by his showing in India’s recent ODI series against England, where he scored an unbeaten 80 in the first match and 77 in the third ODI at Lord’s.
Mitchell, previously ranked No. 1, has slipped to second after a quieter stretch of scores, including 65 in an opening ODI against West Indies followed by two innings of 28 — a reminder of how thin the margins are at the top of any competitive ranking system.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma remain third and fourth respectively in the updated rankings.
In a separate and striking rankings shift, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi jumped 230 places in the T20I batting rankings to reach 48th, up from 278th ahead of a series against Zimbabwe — one of the sharpest single-series ranking jumps in recent memory.
Sooryavanshi’s rise followed a tally of 151 runs across a three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, including two half-centuries, at an age when most cricketers are still years from international selection.
Gill’s climb to the top of the ODI rankings comes as he continues to lead India’s white-ball side, a captaincy role he has held since October 2025 after replacing Rohit Sharma ahead of the Australia tour — underscoring how leadership and individual form can reinforce each other at the top level.
The rankings update follows India’s recent tour of England, where several batters delivered strong performances in the white-ball leg of the series.
