NCRTC operated 47 additional Namo Bharat trips on the Delhi-Meerut corridor on August 27 and 28, bringing trains to an eight-minute frequency across both days to handle the Raksha Bandhan travel surge.
What makes this worth noting operationally isn’t the scale, 47 extra trips over two days is a modest number, but the timing: the enhanced schedule was publicised in advance rather than announced reactively once stations began overcrowding.
Raksha Bandhan’s travel spike is entirely predictable. It happens on the same date range every year, driven by the same underlying pattern, siblings travelling to be together. NCRTC’s response treats that predictability as a planning input rather than an emergency, pre-committing extra capacity to a known demand curve instead of waiting to see how bad the crowding gets.
That’s a distinction worth generalising: most operational strain, in a transit system or a business, comes from foreseeable seasonal spikes handled as if they were surprises. A support team scrambling every Black Friday, a kitchen understaffed every Valentine’s Day, a server under-provisioned every product-launch day, all of these are Raksha Bandhan-shaped problems being treated as one-off crises.
The corridor itself, connecting Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut across roughly 55 kilometres, has reportedly used this same approach around other major festivals, suggesting the frequency-boost playbook is now a standing operational tool rather than a one-time fix. That repeatability, having a known lever to pull when a known spike approaches, is itself the more transferable lesson here.
Regular commuters on the corridor also benefited from the shorter wait times during the two-day window, even outside the specific festival-driven travel demand.
NCRTC publicised the revised timetable in advance through its official channels, giving passengers time to plan their festival travel around the enhanced schedule.
The Namo Bharat service has positioned itself as a faster, more predictable alternative to road travel on the often-congested Delhi-Meerut corridor, particularly during high-traffic festival periods.
